Online Volunteering or ‘How to use the Internet productively’

I have been volunteering online for almost 5 months now and I have never felt better about spending a lot of time on the Internet.

Thanks to the amazing service made possible by the United Nations Volunteers – the UN Online Volunteering platform I have managed to help several organisations from Pakistan, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania in issues concerning women’s rights, equality, poverty alleviation or children with disabilities. The tasks that one can choose from are very many and diverse, raging from contributing to Social Media platforms, designing strategic plans, translations, webdesign, campaigning, housing planning, and the list can go on.

Therefore, if you would like to fill your Internet time with something more productive, both for yourself and for groups of people in need, check out the UNV website.  In the meantime, I will take this opportunity to tell you a bit about the organisation that grew on me: New Hope for Girls Organization.

NHGO is ‘registered to operate in Tanzania mainland to develop girls and young women in various or different regions that will help them socio-economically. Their vision is to ensure that girls become empowered, independent, VALUABLE AND NOT VULNERABLE as it seems to being our society; to end violence against the girl child and women by ensuring human rights are keenly followed; to end violence facing this group by starting from family level to National level. NHGO wants women, men, girls and boys, children and adult, churches, media, Nation to reach to the point of FREELY SAYING NO ON ANY VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. To see girls and women who have been helped by New Hope for Girls Organization reaching out independently to others in different regions of Tanzania. To increase the rate at which women are being empowered in the society indiscriminately.’

In order to get a closer look at how women in Africa are oftenly treated, you can also take a look at Consoler’s story – the founder of NHGO. I can only say that she is the most courageous and strong person I (virtually) know. Unfortunately, due to the very bad conditions that she has been through, her situation at the moment is quite awful, as she is still suffering intense pain and headaches.

Lastly, if you have interest in such things and you would like to also use the Internet productively, NHGO even has an opportunity for you. If you have financial knowledge, you could be selected to Design a Financial Policy for NHGO by applying here and also be part of a multicultural volunteer team working towards the greater good.
