The newest cover of the US Vogue has raised very many controversies about the fashion magazine. Why? Anna Wintour has made the ‘unthinkable’ decision to put Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the cover of Vogues’ magazine. But why is this such a big problem? Most consumers of the magazine defend their point of view as being that Vogue is known as a purely ‘fashion’ based magazine, no gossip included, focusing merely on the trends, looks and styles of society. By putting Kanye West and Kim Kardashian on the cover, many think this has marked the fashion magazines sophistication.
Anna Wintour nevertheless defends her choice of putting them on the cover. Wintour wrote in the issue’s editor’S letter of US Weekly “Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it, I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T.”
And by this I believe she is in the absolute right. All celebrities are defining, influencing and shaping our cultures, our sense of fashion, our styles. Why? Because we see what they are wearing and reflect it upon ourselves to look like them. We aspire to become them. Anna Wintour continued in her defence by giving her personal opinion which in my eyes was quite touching “As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancee on Vogue’s cover. He did nothing of the sort, the gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”
I think she made a very kind and nice choice, one that should have never have brought up any controversy about the magazines values, and what they are trying to present. I find it degrading for others to not think of both Kanye West and Kim Kardashian as fashion icons, as they simply are. Why should they not be on the front cover… they have influenced a large amount of individuals to aspire to a certain fashion sense that they carry along with them, and I believe that they have every right to be in the spotlight of the front cover of Vogue. If I had the possibility to buy the magazine in the store I would, not because it is something different, because the sense and the content as well as the images of the couple as Fashion icons would interest me as much as any other cover of the magazine.
What do you think?
